This is a report on the industrial visit attended by us as a part of the course curriculum. It was a one-day industrial visit to Chennai port trust. The port is located in the Coromandel Coast in southeast India. Chennai port is the second largest port of India and is the third oldest among the 12 major port. The Chennai port has completed 126 years of glorious service to nation’s trade. The port has greatly contributed to the economic growth of the Tamil Nadu state.

The port has 420 acres of water area and 586 acres of land area.The port has 21 along side berths with three docks. It has services to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Korea, China, Mediterranean, Europe, Australia and the US. The port has a current depth of 17m and is capable of handling fourth generation vessels. There is currently an expansion project is going on in the port and after the project is complete, the port will have a depth of 18-22 m depth. One side of the Chennai port is dedicated to the Indian navy for which three service berths are allotted.  

As a management student, we indeed were exposed to various trading aspects engaged in the port. The port handles import and export of various commodities like oil, sugar, cars etc. The port handles variety of cargo, which adds to the economic growth of the nation. The port is currently expected to handle 50 million tones of cargo. Cars are the major exports from the Chennai port. Around 15000 cars are exported each day (mainly Hyundai).

This is my first industrial visit during my post graduation. It was a one-day trip to Chennai port trust. Since it was our first industrial tour, we friends were too excited about it.
